Before we optimize a site we need first define our objectives. The keywords, or search terms, that we want to be found under will match the products or services our business provides. We MUST be pragmatic about this part of the excersise. Research is important. A good place to start is to see what keywords people are 'renting' for Search Engine Marketing.
Search Engine Marketing (SEM), or Pay Per Click, is another method to get traffic to your website. Often SEO and SEM are combined to get best results. Both are going after the same search terms and we can actually see the amount of searches, and the bidding wars, that are going on for specific key word combinations for SEM. This will give us insite into the best words to optimize on for SEO.
One place to get this information is on Google. At the bottom of www.google.com you will see a link for Business Solutions. Then click on 'Ad Words' and setup an account. You don't need to actually buy Ad Words to use the tools. Once you have an account, click on 'Reporting and Tools' and then 'Keyword Tool'.
Now search on what you think people interested in your product or service might search. You may be surprised to see the results. Take a look at suggested similar terms.
What we are looking for are terms that receive a lot of traffic, but for which there is medium to low competion. If you try to optimize on the top keywords you may be disappointed in the results you get with SEO. It is better to be number one on a keyword that gets less traffic.
Once you have determined 3 keywords (three different searches of 1-3 words) we are ready to pick a domain.
